What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

By Reetika ShahAugust 10, 2026

It is completely natural to feel anxious or nervous before your first therapy session. We often have expectations shaped by movies or media—the cold leather couch, the silent therapist taking notes, or the pressure to immediately bare your soul. At Ankahee, we want you to know that the first session is simply a conversation.

Here is what we actually focus on:

1. Setting the Pace: You do not need to share everything right away. Trust is built over time, and you are in control of what you disclose. We start by exploring what brings you to therapy today, at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

2. Understanding Your Background: We look at the context of your life—your relationships, your work, and the environments that shape how you feel. We do not just look at symptoms; we look at the whole story.

3. Aligning Goals: Together, we'll discuss what you hope to get out of our sessions. Whether it's managing anxiety, navigating conflict, or understanding yourself better, we shape therapy around you.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to show up. You don't need a perfectly formed problem; you just need to show up as you are.
